Ana Rewakowicz: Dresswares and other Inflatables
Dressware and Other Inflatables
November 23, 2005 - January 21, 2006

Curator: Gaëtane Verna

The exhibition and its publication are produced by the Foreman Art Gallery with financial contributions from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.

Ana Rewakowicz’s Dressware presents multipurpose dresses that actively adapt to the rigours and challenges of different situations. With these prototype escape mechanisms, portable shelters and floatation devices, Rewakowicz breaks down notions of decorative dress and imagines a utopian fashion based on pure function. The model structures in Dressware reference the 1960s’ visionary ideals, socially responsive form and non-traditional modes of urban living.

Rewakowicz’s “dresses” engage with an alternative tradition of portable architecture and test the boundaries between belonging and identity. For example, the rubber and latex skirt of Dressware I may be inflated into a protective barrier encircling the wearer-performer, isolating and expanding the body’s space in a defensive reaction against the approach of another.

Ana Rewakowicz is an interdisciplinary artist and researcher living and working in Montreal. She developed Dressware during residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts and FoAM Brussels, an independent multidisciplinary art laboratory.
