Exhibitions

Lucie Chan: Tears, and in Between
November 22 - January 20, 2007

Artist: Lucie Chan (Halifax, Canada)

Curator: Vicky Chainey Gagnon

The exhibition is produced by the Foreman Art Gallery with a financial contribution from the Canada Council for the Arts.

Lucie Chan’s practice combines drawing, sculpture, animation, and installation techniques resulting in evocative reflections on contemporary human existence. The repetition of solitary figures in undefined spaces conjures up ideas of isolation and alienation. Chan’s work is particularly concerned with issues of identity in an increasingly globalized world.

For Tears, and in between, Lucie Chan creates a site specific installation composed of large- and small-scale drawings that she then reassembles into sculptural forms, digital animations, and collages. Suspended from the ceiling and walls, they transform the space of the gallery into a contemplative forest of figures.

Born in Georgetown, Guyana Lucie Chan now lives and works in Halifax, Nova Scotia. For the past four years Chan has been teaching at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design where she also earned her MFA degree. Chan’s drawing-based works and installations have been exhibited nationally, most recently as part of a traveling exhibit Just my Imagination. Her work will be showcased in two solo exhibitions at the Foreman Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in 2007. She was nominated for the Sobey Art Award in 2006.
