Dos-à-dos/Face-à-face brings together a series of sculptures created between 2001 and 2008 by Quebec artist Valérie Blass. Using techniques such as molding, modeling, assembling and re-working of surfaces, the artist revitalizes the language of traditional sculpture. Combining various modes of representation, she explores processes that allow her to create forms situated between abstraction and figuration. Often organized two by two, Valérie Blass’ works create in the viewer’s mind curious movements of coming and going between the forms. The strangeness that emanates from these pieces is an invitation to the viewer to lend themselves to new associations from the unexpected, and from colourful and textured shapes.

Valérie Blass lives and works in Montreal. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and a Master of Fine Arts degree both from Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM). She is the recipient of numerous grants and prizes including the Premier prix, in the department of Visual Arts at UQÀM (1995). Her work has been exhibited in solo exhibitions in Toronto and at Montreal galleries and artist-run-centres such as: MoCCA, Parisian Laundry, Centre Clark, Dare-Dare and Galerie B-312. Her work was presented as part of the Triennale of the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal during the summer of 2008 and her sculptures also figure in the collection of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and in private collections. Valérie Blass is represented by the Parisian Laundry.
