September 11 - December 14, 2013

Artist: Lida Abdul (Kabul, Afghanistan)

Video: The White House (2005)

Opening Reception: Wednesday, September 11, 2013 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm

Born in Kabul, Afghanistan, where she is presently based, Lida Abdul is a video and performance artist whose work takes the viewer into an investigation of the personal and familiar. It combines of stereotypes of Western formalism with other aesthetic traditions – Islamic, Buddhist, Hindu, pagan and nomadic – that mutually influenced Afghan art and culture. Abdul holds two BAs, one in philosophy and the other in Political Science, from Cal State University Fullerton and an MFA from the University of California. She has participated in group exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery (2010), Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas (2009) and Haifa Museum of Art, Israel (2009). In 2005, she represented Afghanistan at the Venice Biennale. Her recent major solo exhibitions include War and the Individual at Ausstellungshalle zeitgenössische Kunst Münster (AZKM) in Germany (2010) and Ruins: Stories of Awakening at the Anna Schwartz Gallery in Melbourne (2010). Abdul is represented by the Giorgio Persano Gallery in Turin, Italy.

The exhibition is produced by the Foreman Art Gallery and financially supported by Canada Council for the Arts.
